Phenetic and DNA taxonomy; a comment on Waugh.

چکیده

Sir, This correspondence attempts to clarify two important issues relevant to the DNA barcoding initiative raised in Waugh’s otherwise, cogent and useful review. The first issue concerns the way that Waugh presents the analytic approach to DNA-barcoding data, and the second involves a broader issue with respect to the role of DNA barcoding in modern biology. Both issues are of great importance as to howweview DNA barcoding, and solutions to both will broadly change the way that the taxonomic sciences are accomplished if the view of taxonomy that is expressed by Waugh is the way that the initiative proceeds. It is not the purpose of this correspondence to say whether these approaches are right or wrong, or which one to choose, but rather, to try to put all the cards on the table so that we canmake better decisions about how this important scientific endeavor moves forward.

Delving Into the Details of Evaluating Public Engagement Initiatives; Comment on “Metrics and Evaluation Tools for Patient Engagement in Healthcare Organization- and System-Level Decision-Making: A Systematic Review”

Initiatives to engage the public in health policy decisions have been widely endorsed and used, yet agreed upon methods for systematically evaluating the effectiveness of these initiatives remain to be developed. Dukhanin, Topazian, and DeCamp have thus developed a useful taxonomy of evaluation criteria derived from a systematic review of published evaluation tools that might serve as the basis...

Genetic and Phenetic Approaches to Anopheles Systematics

The Anopheles genus is probably one of the best studied genera among insects of medical importance. Of more than 500 species currently listed in the world about sixty species are vectors of malaria agents and about thirty species are responsible for most of the transmission [1-3]. The important epidemiological role of anopheline species has motivated many studies of taxonomy and systematics wit...
